What Are The Differences Between A Slotting Machine And A Die-cutting Machine in A Cardboard Box Factory?
Nov 24, 2025| In a carton factory, slotting machine and die-cutting machine are two kinds of equipment with different functions. The main differences lie in four areas: functional positioning, application scenarios, structural characteristics and productivity. The specific analysis is as follows:
I. Functional Positioning
Slotted: Its core function is to slot and fold on cardboard, while also performing basic processes such as creases, corners and so on. It is designed to precisely control the depth and position of the slots, allowing the cardboard to fold into a predetermined shape. For example, in corrugated box production, the slotting machine must ensure that the slot depth matches the size of box lid, so that the lid cannot bend due to shallow slotting, or because of deep slotting to affect the angle seal.
Die-cutting machine: using steel blades, steel wires or template to cut, crease and 3D relief cardboard, to achieve complex shape formation. Its function is not limited to basic slotting; it can also produce irregularly shaped boxes (such as corrugated boxes, top and bottom lids), color boxes and die cards. For example, a die-cutter can complete the die-cutting of multiple small cardboard boxes at once, or use yin-yang templates to carve three-dimensional patterns on the surface of cardboard to meet the appearance requirements of high-end packaging.
II. Applicable Scenarios
Slotting Machines
Suitable for mass production of standard type carton, such as standard matching carton for logistics, electroniccommerce and food industries. They have the advantage of being low-cost, efficient and able to rapid slotting large amounts of cardboard, but they struggle with irregular or complex structures.
Die Cutting
More suitable for irregularly shaped cartons, high-end color boxes, small customization production. Electronic packaging, for example, requires high-precision die-cutting to ensure a exquisite appearance; gift box production requires die-cutting to achieve unique shapes; and cosmetic packaging requires die-cutting techniques to achieve complex creasing and three-dimensional effects.
III. Structural features
Slotting Machines
The structure is relatively simple, and the design of upper and lower slotted blades is generally adopted to adjust the position and spacing of the blades to suit different carton sizes. Some models also come with universal slotting blades, which reduce the frequency of mold change and further reduce costs.
Die cutting machine according to the die cutting table and compaction mechanism, can be divided into three types of plateto plate, rotationto plate, rotationto plate. There are two types of Flatbed die-cutting machines: vertical (simple structure but low efficiency) and horizontal (with automatic paper feeding system, high efficiency). Rotateto a flat die cutter to support bidirectional die cutting through reciprocating die cutting tables and rotating rollers. Because of the continuous rotation of the drum, the production efficiency of wheeled die-cutting machine is the highest, but it requires curved die-cutting surface, which leads to technical difficulty and high cost.
Die cutting machine needs to customize die according to the shape of the product, one product to a set of die, limiting flexibility of the die.
IV. INTRODUCTION Production Efficiency
Slotting machines has high production efficiency, especially suitable for the efficient production of standard cartons. For example, some models can achieve slot accuracy of ±0.20mm and a speed of 150 sheets perminute, meeting the need for large orders.
Die cutting machine: circular pressure die cutting machine: high production efficiency, rolling drum continuous rotation, conducive to mass production, but relatively high equipment costs. Flatbed die cutting machine: horizontal die cutting machine has high automation, high production efficiency, vertical die cutting machine structure is simple, easy to maintain, more suitable for small batch production.
